  • About High Noon Books

High Noon Books is a publisher of high interest reading material. We specialize in providing stories on a wide variety of subjects for beginning readers, or students reading a couple of years below their grade level. The goal is to motivate struggling or ELL learners with subjects that appeal to their age, while reinforcing phonics principles along with the most commonly used words in the English language.

    Our materials include:

    • Stories that can be read in one or a few sessions (most are 32 or 48 pages), written at
1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade reading levels. (See 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade readability’ links.)

    • Reading programs and workbooks that can be used for intervention and RTI programs.
       (See links under ‘Reading Programs.’)

    • Phonics-based readers and reading instruction for those who need a systematic,
      phonics-based approach (See ‘1st Grade Phonics-Based.’)

    The Struggling Reader:

You probably know some of the students High Noon Books was founded to help. They are struggling to read when their classmates are reading to learn. They are getting used to falling behind and missing out.

Given the choice, they would skip the picture books and head right for the chapter books, filled with high interest stories and adventures they can relate to. Most of the books they would find appealing are out of their reach, and most of the books they can read look too babyish for them to really like.

For almost three decades, High Noon Books has been a pioneer in publishing chapter books with carefully controlled vocabulary and sentence structures and interesting stories and ideas both readable by and appealing to students at least 8 years old and reading more than a grade below level.

High Noon chapter books are not exercise books that feel like remedial education. They are books an eight to 16 year old student reading at the first through third grade level can read and enjoy. They are often the first books these struggling readers finish. And the look of the books is grown up, too, so our readers will feel good about carrying the very portable five by seven inch paperbacks with them.

    Phonics-Based Chapter Books

In the early 2000s, High Noon Books published a new line of phonics based (low first grade readability) chapter books called Sound Out. Sound Out continues and extends the basic principles that make High Noon Books appealing and accessible to struggling readers: strictly controlled vocabulary, simplified sentence structure, connected text (not picture books), and engaging content.

About High Noon Books and Academic Therapy Publications

The vision for High Noon Books came from John Arena, the founder of Academic Therapy Publications, and author of many of the first High Noon readers.

Established in 1965, Academic Therapy Publications was one of the first publishers to meet the needs of teachers, parents, and students in the field of special education and learning disabilities. The company got its start when John Arena became the editor of the journal titled Academic Therapy. Over the years, the company has extended the range of assessments and supplementary educational materials to include publications that can be used by regular classroom teachers, special education teachers, parents, educational therapists, ESL teachers, and specialists in all fields working with persons with reading, learning, and communication disabilities.
