How to Select the Right Readers: To select the right books for your students, identify the readability of the text; give your students an opportunity to read an excerpt from the book. Have them read aloud from the sample excerpt (about 100 words). If the student makes more than five errors, repeat the process with a less challenging selection. Once you have identified an excerpt where the student makes less than five errors you have found their independent reading level.
